How do we recruit new board members effectively?

Recruiting through personal networks carries real risks — it can create homogeneous boards lacking the skills and diversity needed. A structured approach:

1. Assess skills gaps — review the current board’s skills and identify gaps
2. Develop a skills and competency matrix
3. Advertise openly — post the role publicly through sector networks
4. Create a formal application/nomination process with a clear job description
5. Check for conflicts of interest and ensure potential members are not disqualified persons under Section 19 of the NPO Act
6. Provide an induction process for new board members

The NAF stresses that “your board has a formal and transparent procedure for the election of new members that is based on merit and needed skills.”
